Prune all dead or diseased plant – If the branch is brown or black, it is dead and useless. Removing the dead and diseased areas of the plant will open the plant up to encourage new growth.

Prune vertical branches to the outward facing bud – This will most likely be done at 18-24″. There should be at least 6-10 healthy branches left. Find a bud that faces outward and that will signal you to where you should prune the branch to. Make the cut just above the bud.

Cut the healthy branches at a 45° angle – This will encourage water to drain away from the bud and prevent disease from setting in. Make sure the cuts are straight and not jagged. Obviously this is done when your pruners are nice and sharp.
